Jeep Aims For 50% Increase In Hybrid Suv Sales By 2024

As the automotive industry experiences a seismic shift toward sustainable solutions, Jeep is positioning itself as a critical player in the transitional space between traditional combustion engines and fully electric vehicles (EVs). Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa recently announced an ambitious goal to boost U.S. plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) sales by up to 50% in 2024. This strategic move comes as the Stellantis brand prepares to launch its groundbreaking all-electric SUVs, marking a pivotal moment in its history.

Growth Strategy for PHEVs

Jeep’s commitment to increase PHEV sales to between 160,000 and 170,000 units this year signifies a substantial growth of 40% to 50% from the previous year. This target underscores Jeep’s leadership in PHEV sales within the U.S. and aims to surpass the broader industry’s growth forecast. According to AutoPacific, the overall segment is expected to see a 27.5% increase, which pales compared to Jeep’s trajectory. Antonio Filosa emphasizes the importance of flexibility in this evolving market, stating, “It’s the best time to be flexible, as we are. One of the pillars of growth for the market is freedom of choice.”

Launching the Wagoneer S and Beyond

As Jeep introduces its first all-electric SUV, the Wagoneer S, the brand is expanding its product lineup and setting a standard for future models. Following the Wagoneer S, Jeep plans to roll out the Recon—a Wrangler-like EV—and a new model to replace the discontinued Cherokee, further enriching its portfolio of electric and hybrid vehicles. Filosa confidently asserts, “We have a game plan. We have a business plan, and we believe that price position and product-wise, we are perfect for meeting the volume we want to make.”

Evaluating the Hybrid Market Response

Filosa and Stellantis Chief Technology Officer Ned Curic are actively assessing the potential for traditional hybrids in the U.S. market. The introduction of “range-extender electric vehicle” (REEV) models, which include an onboard generator to recharge the battery, represents an innovative approach to bridging the gap between hybrids and EVs. Curic is optimistic about the prospects of these vehicles, particularly highlighting the upcoming Ram Ramcharger REEV, “This is quite a good option. I’m confident that vehicle is going to do exceptionally well.”

Jeep’s aggressive strategy to expand its PHEV sales while integrating groundbreaking electric technologies illustrates a clear roadmap for the future. Jeep is well-positioned to lead the charge toward a more sustainable and flexible automotive landscape as it navigates the complexities of consumer preferences and regulatory challenges. Their approach caters to current market demands and sets the stage for a smoother transition to all-electric models, promising a greener and more innovative future.
