Instagram users faced a surprising notification on Wednesday as certain photos were permanently deleted from the app’s Stories archives. The issue, caused by a technical bug, left affected users with a message stating, “This story is no longer available.”
Meta, the parent company of Instagram, confirmed the bug’s existence but did not reveal the number of users affected. The company stated that only those whose Stories were lost would see the notification. Meta assured users that the bug had been fixed, but unfortunately, the deleted Stories could not be restored.
By July 2025, the black screen displaying the error message is expected to be removed. This incident has raised awareness about the importance of having multiple backup methods for important media.
Instagram Stories, a feature known for its casual and ephemeral nature, allows users to upload photos, videos, or text posts that disappear after 24 hours. Users can also create a curated Close Friends list for more exclusive content or permanently highlight Stories on their profiles. Unlike regular posts, Stories often include personalized elements such as music, gifs, text, filters, and interactive features like polls.

For many, the Story Archives serve as a digital photo diary. Users save everything from memes and Spotify song screenshots to vacation photos. Instagram’s “memories” feature within the archives tab allows users to revisit old stories from past years on the same date. Some people rely on Story Archives as a convenient way to store pictures and videos, given the app’s auto-upload feature to the archives.
However, Instagram doesn’t automatically save Stories to the camera roll unless users activate this setting. The recent bug affected the Story Archives and Highlights, which has emphasized the need for users to back up their important media outside of the app, regardless of the company’s reliability.
This incident serves as a crucial reminder of the vulnerability of digital memories when relying solely on one platform for storage. For those who lost their Stories, the loss of these digital memories is a significant blow, especially for users who treat their Story Archives as a repository of cherished moments.

As the social media landscape continues to evolve, users are increasingly aware of the necessity for diverse backup solutions. The incident on Instagram highlights the importance of not putting all digital eggs in one basket. Backing up photos, videos, and other media files on multiple platforms or devices can prevent the loss of valuable content due to unexpected technical issues.
While Instagram has resolved the bug that caused the deletion of some Stories, the impact on users underscores a broader lesson in digital media management. Ensuring the safety and longevity of digital memories requires proactive measures, such as enabling automatic backups and regularly saving important files to multiple storage locations. This approach will help safeguard against future incidents, providing peace of mind in an increasingly digital world.
