A new video model is coming to Instagram

Of all the surprises Meta AI could have dropped, a model that can generate videos of Mark Zuckerberg leg-pressing chicken nuggets wasn’t exactly on our bingo card. But behind the hype is what might be the most capable text-to-video model yet. Here’s everything you need to know about Meta AI’s new Movie Gen platform.

It has unique architecture: Meta combined a text-to-image and text-to-video model to build a platform that can generate 16-second clips with state-of-the-art quality.
Insert yourself: You’ll be able to jump into the frame by uploading an image of your likeness; the model was fine-tuned to “preserve human identity and motion.”
You can tweak your own videos: You’ll be able to insert objects, replace elements, and edit the backgrounds of clips you’ve filmed (i.e. giving your dog purple hair, or placing an athlete inside an Olympic stadium).
Built-in audio: The platform has the unique ability to generate audio alongside your clips, including sound effects and a background score.

Stay Tuned: Movie Gen is still in the research phase, but Zuckerberg hinted it’ll be released on Instagram sometime next year.
What it means: Besides its technical advances and realism, the new platform could also be a big step up in terms of accessibility. While roughly 70% of Americans say they’ve used a chatbot within the past three months, far fewer are using AI for video generation. That all could change next year, when 2B monthly Instagram users get access to Movie Gen.
